UTI

The urinary tract consists of the ureters, urethra, bladder, and kidneys. A bacterial infection in any part of the urinary system leads to UTI. Although UTIs can affect anyone, they are more common in females, particularly those who are sexually active, menopausal, or have conditions like diabetes or urinary incontinence.

When to consult a doctor for UTI

If you are pregnant, a child, or an older adult

Consult a doctor immediately if UTI symptoms occur during pregnancy, in children, or in elderly patients, as these groups are at higher risk of complications and need prompt medical care.

If symptoms are severe or unusual

Seek medical attention if a UTI is accompanied by fever, chills, back or side pain, or blood in the urine, as these may indicate a more serious infection.

If UTIs keep recurring or affect daily life

See a doctor if UTIs occur frequently or start interfering with your normal activities, as you may need further investigation or preventive treatment.

Types of UTI

There are various types of urinary tract infections such as:

  • Cystitis: Infection that happens in the bladder
  • Urethritis: Infections caused in the urethra
  • Pyelonephritis: Infections that are caused in the kidneys, this is a serious infection.

UTI symptoms

Symptoms of a urinary tract infection vary from person to person. The severity of these symptoms differs depending on the seriousness of the infection. Some of the UTI symptoms are:

  • A strong, persistent urge to urinate
  • A burning sensation while urinating
  • Passing small amounts of urine frequently
  • Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic pain (in women) or rectal pain (in men)
  • Blood in the urine
  • Fever or chills (indicating the infection may have reached the kidneys)

Children symptoms

  • Pain or burning sensation during urination.
  • Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine.
  • Fever, especially without an obvious cause.
  • Bedwetting in a child who previously stayed dry at night.
  • Irritability or general discomfort in infants.
  • Poor appetite or vomiting.

It is important to consult a doctor early when you have a urinary tract infection to ensure it doesn’t affect your kidneys and lead to a more serious infection.

Can males have a UTI?

Yes, men can get urinary tract infections (UTIs), though they are more common in women. UTIs in men usually occur due to specific conditions, including:

  • An enlarged prostate can obstruct the flow of urine, creating a conducive environment for bacteria to grow and cause infection.
  • Stones in the kidneys can block the urinary tract, making it easier for bacteria to multiply
  • A weak immune system, which may be due to conditions like diabetes or other chronic illnesses
  • Men using urinary catheters are at a higher risk of developing UTIs
  • Sexual activity can increase the chance of UTIs
