eScript token
An eScript token is a unique digital code provided with an electronic prescription in Australia, allowing pharmacies to dispense prescribed medicines. The token serves as a digital replacement for paper prescriptions and is connected to the national electronic prescribing system managed by the Australian Digital Health Agency.
How tokens are delivered (SMS vs. email)
eScript tokens are commonly sent via:
- SMS, containing a QR code or link
- Email, facilitating easy forwarding to a pharmacy
Only one active token exists per prescription to prevent duplication.
Security and digital storage features
eScripts tokens include:
- Encrypted access to prescription information
- Integration with My Health Record is available if activated
- Real-time monitoring to prevent multiple dispensing
- Secure handling under Australian privacy laws
The Australian Digital Health Agency oversees these protections.
Handling lost or expired tokens
If a token is lost or expired:
- Pharmacies can access the prescription through the electronic prescribing system
- The prescribing doctor may reissue a new token if necessary
- Expired prescriptions must be renewed.
eScript tokens allow Australians to manage their prescriptions digitally, securely and efficiently, eliminating the need for paper.
