How long are blood test referrals valid in Australia?

Blood test referrals are generally valid till the patient attends a pathology lab and gives their blood at the collection centre. The validity of online GP referrals depends on the nature of the tests, and there is no set expiry date on an online blood test referral in Australia.

Can I get blood tests requested by my naturopath or nutritionist?

Our doctors will assess your request independently. If the tests are clinically appropriate, we can issue a referral. If not, we cannot provide tests based solely on a naturopath’s or nutritionist’s request.

Do you need a referral for a blood test?

Yes, you need a doctors referral for a blood test in Australia if you want to avail the Medicare benefits. You can also get a blood test done without a referral, but you will end up paying the full cost of the test from your own pocket. A GP referral also gives strength to your blood test request as it is an official document from a registered practitioner.

How quickly are referrals delivered?

Once your online doctor consultation is done with Hola, you will get the pathology referral within minutes if the doctor approves.

Do blood test referrals expire?

Blood test referrals usually have a validity of up to 12 months or until the patient gets the blood tests done at a pathology lab.

What happens with my test results?

You will receive an SMS from Hola stating that your test results are available, with a link to book a follow-up consultation from $29. Additionally, you can contact us at support@hola.health if you’d like your results forwarded to your GP.

Can I book a blood test without a GP referral?

Yes, you can book a blood test without a GP referral in Australia; however, you will not be able to get any Medicare benefits when booking without a valid GP referral.

Can I choose where to have my blood test done?

Yes, with a legitimate online GP referral for blood tests, you can get your blood test done anywhere in Australia. Most pathology collection centres can process standard requests, and availability and booking requirements depends on the test. Once you have received your blood test referral, book a test at a pathology lab of your choice.

Can I request a blood test for someone else, like a child or elderly relative?

Yes, you can request a blood test for someone under your care, provided that the patient for whom the blood test referral is being asked is present during the consultation. The request should also be made under their profile. This process ensures that the blood tests are conducted with proper consideration of the patient’s medical history, current health status, and any specific concerns or symptoms they may have.

Is your blood test bulk-billed?

Blood tests may be bulk billed by many collection centres. Please contact your local centre for their fee schedule. Online GP referrals from Hola Health are not bulk-billed but are priced reasonably.

Can you go to any pathology with a referral?

Yes, you can go to any pathology lab with a valid GP referral letter in Australia.

Will I have to book the test in advance?

With the referral in hand, you can contact a pathology centre to schedule your appointment. Some blood tests require a booking. Please call the collection centre to check for their booking requirements.

The radiology/pathology clinic said there are no contact details on my referral. What should I do?

The clinic’s contact details are included along the bottom edge of your referral letter. Please check there
