Who is a Osteopath ?  

An osteopath is an allied health specialist who diagnoses and treats conditions associated with the body’s muscles, joints, and other parts of the musculoskeletal system.  

Treatment may include hands-on techniques, exercise advice and lifestyle recommendations.  

What does an osteopath do? 

An osteopath looks at how different parts of your body work together to understand the possible causes of pain or movement problems.  Treatment may include hands-on approaches, exercise instruction, and lifestyle suggestions. 

An osteopath may:  

  1. Assess pain, injuries, and movement issues. 
  1. Examine your muscles, joints, and movements. 
  1. Employ massage and other hands-on treatments. 
  1. Use dry needling where appropriate. 
  1. Recommend exercises. 
  1. Provide advice about posture, movement and lifestyle.

Osteopaths can help with a variety of pain, injuries, and mobility difficulties, including:

What happens during an osteopathy appointment?

Osteopath vs physiotherapist vs chiropractor 

Osteopath Physiotherapist Chiropractor 
Focuses on the relationship between the body’s structure and function, particularly the musculoskeletal system. Focuses on movement, physical function, rehabilitation and recovery from injury or illness. Focuses mainly on diagnosing and managing musculoskeletal conditions, particularly problems involving the spine and joints. 
May use hands-on techniques, exercise advice and other approaches. May use exercises, manual therapy, education and rehabilitation techniques. May use manual techniques, including spinal manipulation, alongside exercise and other advice. 
Can help with problems such as back pain, neck pain and joint or muscle problems. Can help with pain, movement problems, injuries and rehabilitation. Can help with some musculoskeletal pain and movement problems. 
Is an AHPRA-regulated profession in Australia. Physiotherapy is an AHPRA-regulated profession. Chiropractic is an AHPRA-regulated profession. 

When should you see an osteopath? 

Consider seeing an osteopath if:
