What Is An MRI And When Is An MRI Referral Given?

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a medical test that uses a strong magnet and radio waves to take detailed pictures of the inside of the body. It helps doctors see structures like organs, tissues, and bones without using X-rays. It provides clear pictures without using radiation, making it safe for most people.

Your GP will suggest an MRI, if further investigation is needed to check various internal organs such as the brain, spine, joints, and organs in the abdomen and pelvis.

Confused

What Will The Referral Include?

The referral will typically include information about the specific type of MRI study needed and any specific areas or structures to focus on. For example, an MRI of the brain, spine, joints, or other body parts may be requested.

How Will The Referral Be Given?

If an MRI is recommended, your healthcare provider will issue a referral for the MRI scan. This referral may be in the form of a written order or an electronic prescription

Will I Have To Book The Test In Advance?

MRI scans mostly require prior booking. With the referral in hand, you can contact a radiology centre to schedule your appointment.

How Much Does An MRI Cost?

Not all MRIs are covered by Medicare. Please contact your local radiology centre for their fees schedule.
