Private billing

Private billing refers to a payment system in which patients pay the entire doctor consultation fee upfront and subsequently claim a Medicare rebate on their own.

Upfront payment and rebate claiming.

  • The patient settles the full fee at the clinic.
  • Medicare rebates can be claimed through Easyclaim or myGov.
  • The rebate is reimbursed directly to the patient.

Reasons clinics opt for private billing.

  • Increasing costs related to operations and staffing.
  • Consultations that are longer or more complicated.
  • Decreased dependence on bulk billing incentives.

How to manage healthcare expenses as a private patient?

  • Enquire about fees prior to making a booking.
  • Monitor balances for the Medicare safety net.

Private billing offers flexibility for clinics, but it necessitates that Australians take an active role in managing their rebates and out-of-pocket medical expenses.
