Individual Healthcare Identifiers (IHI)
Individual Healthcare Identifiers (IHIs) are unique 16-digit numbers provided to people in Australia to help healthcare practitioners precisely match health information to the particular patient. An IHI is often used for My Health Record, eScripts, pathology requests, and other digital healthcare services.
Do I need an IHI if I do not have Medicare?
Yes, a few individuals without Medicare may still require an IHI to receive healthcare services in Australia.
This may include:
- Foreign visitors
- International students
- Temporary visa holders
- People not eligible for Medicare
Eligible people without Medicare can apply for an IHI directly through Services Australia.
How to find your IHI number?
There are various ways to find your IHI number.
You can:
- Log in to your Medicare online account with myGov.
- Check My Health Record.
- Consult your healthcare professional or contact Services Australia for assistance.
If you don’t already have an IHI, Services Australia may generate one when you sign up for Medicare.
