Gout test

• High uric acid levels: When uric acid levels rise, it can form crystals in the joints.
• Reduced uric acid excretion: When the kidneys don’t clear uric acid effectively, blood levels can rise.
• A diet high in purines: Foods like red meat, seafood, and alcohol increase uric acid production.
• Genetics: A family history of gout increases the risk.
• Certain medical conditions or medications: Conditions such as kidney disease or medicines like diuretics can elevate uric acid levels.

• Sudden, acute joint pain (often in the big toe)
• Swelling, redness, or warmth in the joint
• Pain that starts at night
• Restricted movement in the affected joint
• Recurrent flare-ups

• Sudden joint pain with swelling and redness
• Recurrent gout attacks
• Family history of gout
• Monitoring known gout or uric acid levels

Multiple tests can help diagnose gout and determine its severity.

• Blood test- measures uric acid levels and inflammatory markers.
• Joint fluid test- checks for uric acid crystals in the joint (Best diagnostic test).
• Imaging test- such as an ultrasound or X-ray, if needed (Rarely)

Note: While a telehealth GP can provide a referral for a blood test, certain diagnostic procedures like a joint fluid test or physical examination must be performed in-person by a doctor or specialist.

The test measures uric acid levels in the bloodstream or identifies uric acid crystals in joint fluid, both of which are associated with gout.

• Uric acid levels may be normal during an acute gout flare.
• Elevated uric acid levels may not always mean gout
• Other joint conditions can have similar symptoms
• Test results require clinical interpretation by a healthcare professional.

• Fasting may be required for blood tests
• Drink sufficient water unless advised otherwise
• Avoid alcohol and high-purine foods before testing
• Continue medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.
• Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that are easy to roll up
