Conception Date Calculator: Estimate your conception date
Calculate your conception window
Select the method you’d like to use to estimate your conception window. Each option uses a different starting point, so choose the one that best matches the information you have.
Your Results
Based on your input, here is your estimated timeline.
This is the approximate day fertilization occurred.
Intercourse during these days most likely led to conception.
Your approximate 40-week gestation mark.
*Estimates only. See full clinical & legal disclaimer below.
The biology: Sex date vs. conception date
Many people think conception happens on the day you have sex. That’s not quite right. Sperm can survive inside the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days while waiting for ovulation. Once an egg is released, it only survives for 12 to 24 hours.
When you calculate your conception date, you’re identifying the day the egg was fertilized, which usually coincides with ovulation. However, the intercourse that led to conception may have happened up to five days earlier. Our conception calculator factors in this natural timeline to give you a more realistic estimate.
4 Ways to estimate your conception date
Last Menstrual Period (LMP):
Based on a standard 280-day human gestation. If you have a regular 28-day cycle, conception usually occurs around Day 14.
The math: LMP + 14 days. If cycles are regular and cycle length is 21-35 days, ovulation can be estimated as LMP + cycle length – 14 days.
Estimated Due Date (EDD):
If your doctor has given you a due date, the calculator simply counts backward by exactly 266 days (38 weeks) to estimate the likely day of fertilization.
Early Ultrasound:
It is generally considered the most accurate method for pregnancy dating during the first trimester for women with irregular periods. A sonographer measures your baby’s Crown-Rump Length (CRL) at 7-12 weeks.
The math: Ultrasound date minus gestational age plus 14 days.
IVF embryo transfer:
It provides the most precise estimate of conception timing.
The math: Transfer date minus the embryo’s age (usually 3 or 5 days).
Australian healthcare providers generally rely on early ultrasound dating when there is uncertainty about pregnancy dates.
Gestational age vs. fetal age (The “two-week” phantom period)
Many expectant parents are confused by this calculation at their first doctor’s visit.
Doctors measure pregnancy using gestational age, which begins on the first day of your last menstrual period. This means you’re medically considered “2 weeks pregnant” before you’ve even conceived.
Fetal age, on the other hand, is your baby’s actual age, starting from the estimated date of conception. This means fetal age is typically around two weeks behind gestational age.
You’re pregnant! What are your next steps?
Once you’ve used this tool to determine your conception date, it is time to start your antenatal care. Here’s what the pathway looks like in Australia:
- Confirm the pregnancy: While a home test is a great first step, a doctor may recommend or arrange a quantitative hCG blood test to confirm the pregnancy and assess hormone levels, if clinically indicated. This blood test may detect pregnancy earlier than many home urine tests, depending on individual hormone levels.
- Book a dating scan: An early ultrasound, usually done between 7 and 8 weeks (but can be between 8-14 weeks when conception date is uncertain), helps confirm the fetal heartbeat and provides the estimated due date used for ongoing pregnancy care.
- Manage early symptoms: The first trimester can be tough. If morning sickness or severe nausea is making it hard to get to work, Hola Health offers online telehealth consults. You can speak with a doctor in Australia from home to request a consultation for a medical certificate or to discuss symptom management options, if clinically appropriate.
Note: If nausea and vomiting are severe and unable to keep fluids down, you need to seek urgent in-person care.
Conception and pregnancy FAQs
1. What is an estimated conception date?
It is the estimated time when fertilization most likely occurred. Since intercourse doesn’t necessarily happen on the same day as ovulation/fertilization, the result is given as a window.
2. How do I know the exact day I conceived?
Unless you had IVF with a confirmed transfer date, it’s impossible to know the exact day. Sperm can live for up to five days, while the egg is only fertile for about 12 to 24 hours, so the estimate is given as a window.
3. Is the conception date 2 weeks after my last period?
For a standard 28-day cycle, ovulation and conception usually occur around day 14. If your cycle length differs, the estimated date will change as well.
4. Can an ultrasound be wrong about the conception date?
Ultrasounds performed during the first trimester are generally very accurate for determining gestational age. The later an ultrasound is done, the less precise it becomes for dating the pregnancy.
5. How many days after sex does conception happen?
Conception can happen anywhere from a few hours to 5 days after intercourse, since sperm can survive for up to 5 days in the body waiting for ovulation to happen.
6. What is a conception estimator?
It’s a tool that uses information like your LMP, due date, ultrasound, or IVF transfer date to estimate a likely your conception window.
7. How is IVF conception calculated?
IVF conception is the most reliable method. The embryo’s exact age at transfer (usually day 3 or day 5) is subtracted from the transfer date to give an exact conception date.
8. Can you get pregnant if you have sex 3 days before ovulation?
Yes. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days, so intercourse several days before ovulation can still result in pregnancy.
9. Can a telehealth doctor confirm my pregnancy?
A telehealth doctor can discuss your symptoms, request a pathology referral for an hCG blood test if clinically appropriate, and guide your next steps.
10. Can a conception calculator prove paternity?
No. This calculator estimates when conception most likely occurred, but its results are not suitable for establishing paternity or resolving legal matters.
