Overview

Low self-esteem is like an unwanted shadow that lingers, gradually eroding one’s self-confidence and sense of worth. It affects many, but understanding its reasons is essential for bringing it to light. The root causes include a blend of personal experiences, social pressures, and psychological characteristics, all merging to shape one’s self-perception. Let’s delve into this complicated web and uncover the genuine causes of those recurring feelings of inadequacy.

Common characteristics of low self-esteem

Low self-esteem is characterised by several distinct traits and behaviours, including:

  • Self-criticism or saying negative things about yourself
  • Focusing on your flaws rather than strengths
  • Regularly comparing yourself to others
  • Negative self-talk
  • Difficulty accepting compliments
  • Avoiding new challenges due to lack of confidence
  • Prioritising others’ approval over personal needs
  • Hesitancy and indecisiveness
  • Avoid social interactions due to fear of judgment
  • Struggle to make friends

What could be the root causes of low self-esteem?

Causes of low self-esteem include:

  • Unhappy childhood experiences where parents or caregivers were extremely critical.
  • Personal failures or poor academic performance in school
  • Ongoing toxic or unsupportive relationships affecting self-worth
  • Chronic medical problems
  • Distorted thinking and pessimistic thought processes
  • Comparing yourself to others on social media

What are the effects of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem can have many emotional, behavioural, and psychological effects. Some common effects include:

Emotional effects:

  • Anxiety and depression: Persistent negative thoughts and feelings about oneself can cause anxiety and grief.
  • Feelings of worthlessness: People with low self-esteem may believe that they do not deserve pleasure or achievement.
  • Lack of confidence: They may question their abilities and avoid taking chances or attempting new things.
  • Self-criticism: Self-criticism is defined as excessive self-blame and a focus on perceived shortcomings or mistakes.

Behavioural effects:

  • Avoidance of social situations: Fear of rejection or judgment can lead to social disengagement and isolation.
  • Passive behaviour: Difficulty asserting oneself or advocating for personal interests and rights.
  • Overachieving or underachieving: Some people may overcompensate by becoming perfectionists, whilst others might avoid tasks for fear of failing.
  • Substance abuse: Low self-esteem can lead to dangerous behaviours such as substance abuse as a means of coping mechanism.

Interpersonal effects:

  • Interpersonal issues: Relationship issues include insecure attachment patterns, a persistent need for validation, and remaining in toxic relationships.
  • Lack of trust: Individuals with poor self-esteem may struggle to trust others for fear of being judged or rejected.
  • Over-reliance on approval: Seeking frequent affirmation from others and determining one’s value based on the views of others.

Work or school-related effects:

  • Fear of failure: Refusing to take on new tasks or opportunities because you are afraid you will fail.
  • Procrastination: Procrastination is the practice of putting off duties because one believes that they are incapable of doing them satisfactorily.
  • Lower performance: A lack of confidence can impair academic or professional performance, increasing feelings of inadequacy.

Physical health:

  • Stress-related illnesses: Chronic stress, which is linked to low self-image, can cause headaches, exhaustion, and other physical symptoms.
  • Poor self-care: People with low self-esteem may ignore their physical health by not exercising, eating inappropriately, or neglecting medical concerns.

When should I see my doctor?

If low self-esteem is interfering with your everyday life or mental well-being, seek medical attention. Persistent feelings of worthlessness, anxiety, or sadness that continue for weeks, difficulties functioning at work or school, withdrawal from social situations, or engaging in dangerous behaviors such as drug abuse are all warning signs. If you detect physical signs such as exhaustion, sleep problems, or stress-related health issues, seek medical attention. Furthermore, if you have thoughts of self-harm or suicide, get emergency medical attention. Early intervention can help prevent these problems from deteriorating and enhance both mental and physical health.

Where to get help?

If you’re struggling with mental health, there are several available resources where you may seek help:

  1. Lifeline: For anyone in crisis or thinking about suicide, call 13 11 14 or chat online at Lifeline.
  2. Suicide Call Back Service: For anyone contemplating suicide, call 1300 659 467.

Uncovering the roots of low self-esteem is like assembling a complicated puzzle. By exploring the combination of early life experiences, societal expectations, personal challenges, and psychological tendencies, we can start to perceive the full picture. To overcome this, it’s important to question those negative beliefs, foster positive relationships, and embrace our true selves. With some self-reflection and encouragement, we can reshape our self-image and confidently shine in the limelight.
