Usually not. Viruses, such as norovirus, or toxins in contaminated food cause most cases of gastroenteritis. Antibiotics don’t work on viruses, so they won’t help in these cases. That said, the treatment and medication depend on doctor’s assessments.  

How to manage gastro symptoms at home 

• Sip oral rehydration solutions to help replace lost fluids and salts. 

• Take small, frequent sips of water rather than drinking large amounts at once 

• Once you’re able to eat again, gradually reintroduce bland foods such as rice, toast, or crackers.
