Repeat script

Repeat script is an approved authorization included on an Australian prescription that allows a patient to receive the same medication multiple times without returning to the doctor. Repeats are issued when a medication is safe for ongoing use, and clinical review is not required at each supply.  

How repeats are managed at the pharmacy 

Australian pharmacies manage repeat scripts by:  

• Recording each supply against the original prescription 

• Only giving the number of repeats approved by the doctor 

• Retaining prescriptions or managing access through approved eScript systems 

• Refusing supply if repeats are exhausted or expired 

Pharmacists must comply with the standards set by the Pharmacy Board of Australia.  

PBS rules for repeat intervals  

Under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS): 

• Minimum repeat intervals may apply 

• Each supply is restricted unless clinically justified 

• Repeat intervals differ according to the medicine classification 

These rules are designed to prevent misuse and support the appropriate use of medicines. 

Valid duration of repeat scripts in Australia 

Most prescriptions with repeats are valid for:  

• 12 months from the date of issue 

• Prescriptions for certain controlled or specialist medicines have shorter validity. 

Repeat scripts make it easier and more affordable for Australians to access treatment safely under the rules.
