What is a thyroid ultrasound?
A thyroid ultrasound is a safe imaging procedure that utilises sound waves to produce clear images of the thyroid gland located in the neck. It helps evaluate the size, structure, and presence of nodules or other abnormalities without using radiation.

What symptoms may indicate the need for a thyroid ultrasound?
- Visible lump or swelling in the neck
- Trouble swallowing
- Ongoing hoarseness
- Neck pain or tightness
- Abnormal results from thyroid blood tests
- Enlarged thyroid (goitre) found during a physical exam
When is a thyroid ultrasound referral recommended?
- Suspicion of thyroid nodules
- Abnormal results from thyroid function tests
- Monitoring existing thyroid nodules
- Assessment of thyroid enlargement (goitre)
- Follow-up for previously identified thyroid issues
What conditions can a thyroid ultrasound help detect?
- Thyroid nodules: Lumps within the thyroid gland that may be solid or fluid filled.
- Goitre: Enlargement of the thyroid gland.
- Thyroid cysts: fluid-filled sacs within the gland.
- Inflammation (thyroiditis): Changes in the thyroid’s texture resulting from inflammation.
- Suspicious masses: Characteristics that may necessitate additional testing, like a biopsy.
What does a thyroid ultrasound show?
A thyroid ultrasound provides information about the size, shape, and internal composition of the thyroid gland. It can detect nodules, cysts, enlargement, and structural changes, and helps determine whether further evaluation is required.
What are the limitations?
- Cannot assess thyroid hormone levels (blood tests are necessary)
- Cannot verify if a nodule is malignant without a biopsy
- Very small irregularities may necessitate additional imaging
- Results may need to be correlated with clinical observations and laboratory tests
How to prepare for a thyroid ultrasound?
Typically, no specific preparation is needed. However, you may keep the following in mind:
- Wear comfortable attire that allows easy access to the neck area
- Remove any necklaces or jewellery from the neck
- Follow any specific instructions given by the imaging center
