What is an ultrasound test?
An ultrasonic test is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the internal organs and tissues. It is a non-invasive, painless way of assessing various body areas.

- Unexplained lumps and swelling
- Pregnancy-related concerns
- Pain in the joints or soft tissues
- Urinary issues.
- Suspected organ abnormalities
If you are experiencing severe pain, heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing, or any life-threatening symptoms, please call 000 immediately or visit your nearest Emergency Department.
What conditions can an ultrasound detect?
- Gallstones (hardened deposits in the gallbladder).
- Kidney stones (mineral deposits that hinder urine flow).
- Cysts (fluid-filled sacs in organs or tissues).
- Tumours (abnormal growths that can be benign or malignant).
- Monitoring fetal growth and health.
- Organ inflammation, such as liver or renal problems.
What type of ultrasound tests are available?
- Ultrasound exams differ according to the region being checked.
- Abdominal ultrasonography checks organs such as the liver and kidneys.
- Pelvic ultrasonography evaluates the reproductive organs.
- Obstetric ultrasonography monitors the pregnancy.
- Doppler ultrasonography assesses blood flow.
- Musculoskeletal ultrasonography evaluates the muscles and joints.
Each kind is intended to examine certain areas of the body.
What does an ultrasound show?
An ultrasound may produce real-time views of inside organs, tissues, and blood flow. It allows healthcare professionals to identify issues, track progress, and inform diagnosis or treatment without utilising radiation.
What are the limitations of an ultrasound test?
- Image quality may be influenced by body size or gas in the gut.
- Cannot always readily distinguish between specific tissue kinds.
- Confirmation may require further imaging (e.g., CT or MRI).
- The results rely on the operator’s expertise.
Note: Telehealth consultations have limitations. A GP may determine that a physical examination is required to safely assess your condition before a referral can be issued. In such cases, you will be advised to see an in-person GP.
How should I prepare for an ultrasound test?
- Follow fasting instructions if necessary (for abdominal imaging).
- Drink water and have a full bladder for pelvic scans (if recommended).
- Wear comfortable and loose clothes.
- Avoid adding lotions or oils to the region under examination.
