What is a bone density scan (DEXA)?
A bone density scan, also called a DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) or BMD (Bone Mineral Density) , is a simple, painless test that assesses bone health by measuring bone density. It uses low-dose X-rays to examine bone mineral density in areas such as the hip and lower back.

- Early menopause (before age 45)
- Smoking or heavy alcohol use
- Long-term steroids usage

- Women aged 65 and over
- Men aged 70 and over

- People with medical conditions that weaken bones
- Long-term steroid users
- Assessing the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatment.
What conditions can a DEXA scan help detect?
- Osteoporosis- A condition where bones become weak and fragile, increasing the risk of fractures.
- Osteopenia- Bone density that is lower than normal but not severe enough to be classified as osteoporosis.
- Fracture risk assessment- Helps calculate the likelihood of future fractures.
- Bone loss monitoring- Observes bone density changes over time, to help manage your condition over time.
What does a bone density scan measure?
A (Bone density scan) DEXA scan measures bone mineral density (BMD) to determine how much mineral content your bones contain. It provides a T-score (compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult) and a Z-score (compares your bone density to people of your age and sex). These scores help assess fracture risk.
What are the limitations?
- Does not identify all causes of fracture
- Does not fully evaluate bone quality or structure
- Minor changes may not be detected over short periods
- Not suitable for pregnant women.
How to prepare for a bone density scan?
- Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before the scan.
- Wear comfortable, relaxed-fit clothes (no metal zips or buttons).
- Inform your provider if you are pregnant.
- Inform your doctor if you recently had a barium study or CT scan with contrast.
