Pharmaceutical benefit scheme (PBS)

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) is an Australian government program that subsidises the cost of numerous prescription medications, making them more accessible to Australians. People with Medicare cards can access PBS-listed medicines at a lower price from licensed pharmacies across the country.

How does the PBS work?

When a doctor prescribes a PBS-listed drug, eligible patients pay the subsidised PBS price rather than the full private cost.

The procedure normally goes like this:

  • A doctor issues a prescription for a PBS-approved drug
  • The prescription is carried to a pharmacy
  • The pharmacy checks Medicare eligibility
  • The patient pays the PBS copayment amount
  • The Australian government covers the remaining costs

Some medications may have additional qualifying conditions or need approval before receiving a subsidy.

What is the PBS Safety Net?

The PBS Safety Net reduces medication costs for people and families who need multiple prescriptions each year.

Once a patient or family meets the yearly PBS Safety Net threshold:

  • PBS medications may get cheaper.
  • Concession card members can access medications at no additional cost.
  • General patients pay a substantially lower sum.

Patients can keep track of qualifying PBS expenditures at their pharmacist.

Who is eligible?

PBS subsidies are often offered to:

  • Australian residents possessing a Medicare card.
  • Visitors from qualifying countries participating in the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement.
  • Concession cardholders
  • Pensioners and some veterans

Eligibility and prescription drug coverage may differ based on the prescription given and the specific circumstances.

Can PBS cover telehealth prescriptions?

Yes, PBS subsidies can still be applied to qualified drugs prescribed during telemedicine consultations. When you obtain an online prescription (eScript) from a Hola Health doctor, eligible medications may still receive the PBS subsidy when you present your Medicare card at your local pharmacy.
