A referral from a GP is often required to access Medicare rebates for specialist appointments in Australia. Without a valid referral, you may still be able to see a specialist, but you might pay the full cost without receiving a Medicare benefit. The amount of rebate depends on the specialist, consultation type, and whether the doctor charges above the Medicare schedule fee.

Note: A GP referral to a specialist usually lasts 12 months from your first appointment with that specialist, unless the referral states a different period.

Referrals can often be arranged during telehealth consultations if clinically appropriate. Before booking a specialist appointment, it is always a good idea to confirm whether the referral is valid and what out-of-pocket costs may apply.

Important – If you’re experiencing a medical emergency, call 000 immediately. “If you’re having thoughts of self-harm or are in crisis, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 (24/7) or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636, or call 000 if you’re in immediate danger.

Request a specialist referral online with Hola Health and receive it in minutes if approved.
