Medical practitioner
A “Medical Practitioner” is a legal term in Australia for someone registered to practice medicine with the Medical Board of Australia via AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency). This comprises general practitioners (GPs), surgeons, psychiatrists, and other medical professionals who may diagnose, treat, prescribe medications, and offer medical care.
How to check if a medical practitioner is registered (AHPRA register)
In Australia, all practising doctors are required to register with AHPRA and the Medical Board of Australia.
You may confirm a doctor’s registration by accessing the official AHPRA online registry. The register enables you to check:
- Registration status
- Medical specialisation
- Conditions or limits (if appropriate)
- Practice endorsements
This allows patients to establish that a doctor is legally licensed to practise medicine in Australia.
Types of medical practitioners
There are several sorts of medical practitioners in Australia.
- General Practitioners (GPs): GPs provide primary healthcare and are typically the initial point of contact for medical issues. They diagnose common ailments, write prescriptions, offer preventative care, and send patients to specialists when required.
- Medical specialists: Medical specialists have received advanced training in a certain area of medicine. Examples include psychiatrists, cardiologists, dermatologists, paediatricians, endocrinologists, and specialist general practitioners. Most specialists require a referral from a general practitioner before scheduling a consultation.
- Surgeons: Surgeons are medical practitioners specially trained to perform surgical procedures. Examples include orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and general surgeons.
- Emergency medicine doctors: These doctors work in emergency rooms and treat urgent or life-threatening medical issues.
- Telehealth doctors: Telehealth medical practitioners provide remote consultations via phone or video sessions. They may assess symptoms, prescribe medications if clinically indicated, issue medical certificates, and coordinate referrals.
