What is a bladder ultrasound?

A bladder ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to produce pictures of the urinary bladder. It assists in assessing bladder structure, urine retention, and potential issues of the bladder without the use of radiation.

  • Challenges with urination
  • Frequent trips to urinate
  • Discomfort or a burning sensation while urinating
  • Presence of blood in the urine
  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Sensation of not fully emptying the bladder
  • When urinary retention is suspected
  • In cases of recurrent urinary tract infections
  • When there is blood in the urine
  • For monitoring existing bladder health issues
  • To evaluate post-void residual urine levels

Note: If you are completely unable to pass urine, experiencing severe lower abdominal pain, or have significant visible blood in your urine, do not book an online consultation. Call 000 or attend the nearest Emergency Department immediately.
  • Urinary retention: The bladder does not fully empty.
  • Bladder stones: Solid mineral accumulations found in the bladder.
  • Wall thickening: This may indicate ongoing irritation or inflammation.
  • Tumours: Unusual growths located in the bladder.
  • Post-void residual urine: The amount of urine left in the bladder after urination is measured.

A bladder ultrasound can reveal the dimensions, form, and thickness of the bladder walls. It can assess urine volume, detect stones or unusual masses, and gauge the amount of residual urine after urination.

  • It may miss very small tumours.
  • It cannot definitively diagnose cancer without additional examinations.
  • The assessment of adjacent structures is limited.
  • Results may require alignment with urine analysis or cystoscopy.

Note: An online consultation cannot replace an in-person physical assessment or a physical urine test. If your symptoms suggest an acute infection or require physical palpation, the GP may advise an in-person visit to a local clinic.
  • Consume water as directed to achieve a full bladder.
  • Refrain from urinating before the examination if instructed.
  • Dress in comfortable attire.
  • Adhere to the guidelines given by the imaging facility.
