What is a gallbladder ultrasound?

A gallbladder ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that employs sound waves to generate images of the gallbladder and surrounding areas. It helps evaluate gallstones, inflammation, and detect bile duct abnormalities without using radiation.

  • Pain in the upper right abdomen
  • Discomfort following the consumption of fatty foods
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever accompanied by abdominal pain
  • Jaundice (yellowish discolouration of the skin or eyes)
  • Unexplained bloating or digestive issues

Note: If you are experiencing severe abdominal pain, high fever, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin/eyes), call 000 or go to the nearest Emergency Department immediately. These can be signs of a medical emergency.

  • When gallstones are suspected
  • When symptoms of gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis) are present
  • In cases of abnormal liver function tests
  • For the evaluation of jaundice
  • When there is persistent upper abdominal pain without a clear diagnosis
  • Gallstones: Solidified bile deposits that may lead to pain or blockage.
  • Inflammation (cholecystitis): Swelling and irritation of the gallbladder.
  • Bile duct obstruction: A blockage that can cause jaundice or infection.
  • Gallbladder polyps: Small growths located on the lining of the gallbladder.
  • Sludge: Thickened bile that might indicate the potential for stone formation.

A gallbladder ultrasound reveals the size, shape, and contents of the gallbladder. It can identify stones, thickening of the gallbladder wall, fluid accumulation around the gallbladder, and enlargement of nearby bile ducts.

  • May not identify extremely small stones within the bile ducts.
  • Cannot directly evaluate gallbladder function.
  • Image quality could be compromised by bowel gas or obesity.
  • Additional imaging (like CT or MRI) might be necessary in certain situations.

Note: A telehealth consultation does not include a physical abdominal examination. An in-person assessment by a GP is recommended for a comprehensive clinical evaluation.
  • Refrain from eating for 6–8 hours before the procedure (as directed).
  • Avoid fatty foods leading up to the exam.
  • Consume limited amounts of water if necessary for taking medications.
  • Adhere to the specific guidelines given by the imaging centre.
