What is a bladder ultrasound?
A bladder ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to produce pictures of the urinary bladder. It assists in assessing bladder structure, urine retention, and potential issues of the bladder without the use of radiation.

What symptoms may indicate the need for a bladder ultrasound?
- Challenges with urination
- Frequent trips to urinate
- Discomfort or a burning sensation while urinating
- Presence of blood in the urine
- Pain in the lower abdomen
- Sensation of not fully emptying the bladder
What does a bladder ultrasound show?
A bladder ultrasound can reveal the dimensions, form, and thickness of the bladder walls. It can assess urine volume, detect stones or unusual masses, and gauge the amount of residual urine after urination.
What are the limitations?
- It may miss very small tumours.
- The assessment of adjacent structures is limited.
- Results may require alignment with urine analysis or cystoscopy.
Note: An online consultation cannot replace an in-person physical assessment or a physical urine test. If your symptoms suggest an acute infection or require physical palpation, the GP may advise an in-person visit to a local clinic.
How to prepare for a bladder ultrasound?
- Consume water as directed to achieve a full bladder.
- Refrain from urinating before the examination if instructed.
- Dress in comfortable attire.
- Adhere to the guidelines given by the imaging facility.
