What types of hip X-rays are available?
Hip X-rays can be taken from different angles to provide a clearer view of the joint and surrounding structures.
- AP pelvis view- Front view of both the hips and pelvis
- Lateral hip view- Side view of the affected hip
- Frog-leg view- The legs are gently turned outward to get a clearer view of the joint structure (often used in younger patients)
What does a hip X-ray show?
A hip X-ray shows the shape and alignment of the hip joint, including the ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum). It can help detect broken bones, arthritis, joint narrowing, and other bone changes.
What are the limitations?
- Cannot fully assess soft tissue injuries
- Initial joint damage may not be visible
- Does not clearly show muscles, tendons, or cartilage

- Usually, no special preparation is required.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Remove jewellery or metal objects.
- Inform staff if you are pregnant.
