If you have health concerns, consult an AHPRA-registered telehealth doctor or request a medical certificate online if clinically appropriate. Please note: Hola Health does not currently offer Mental Health Care Plans.

Chlamydia is among the most prevalent sexually transmit infections (STIs) across the globe, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. In 2021, nearly 86,000 Australians were diagnosed with it1. While often showing no symptoms, it can lead to serious health problems if left unaddressed. Understanding the signs of chlamydia in men is the key to ensuring early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. In this article, let’s see how chlamydia affects men and women and how a telehealth doctor can help.

Note: This content is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Telehealth GPs cannot perform physical examinations. Diagnosis of Chlamydia requires a pathology test (urine sample or swab). Prescriptions are issued at the strict clinical discretion of the doctor after reviewing test results.

We recommend sharing your consult summaries with your regular GP and bulk billing is available for eligible patients during Medicare-defined periods; otherwise, private fees apply. Ensure your privacy is protected. All consultations are strictly confidential and conducted via secure, encrypted platforms to safeguard your personal health data.

What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI). The infection primarily transmits through sexual intercourse, including anal, vaginal, and oral sex. Chlamydia can infect both men and women, often without visible symptoms, potentially leading to complications if ignored. Approximately 40 to 96 per cent of people with chlamydia2 are asymptomatic. It is important to get regular screening and engage in safe sex methods for prevention.

What are the symptoms of chlamydia?

Chlamydia is often asymptomatic, particularly in women, but when symptoms are present, they may differ between men and women.

1. Chlamydia symptoms in men:

  • A clear or cloudy discharge from the penis
  • Pain or discomfort while urinating
  • Pain or swelling in the testicles
  • Sore throat, if the infection is in the throat, usually due to oral sex.
  • Discomfort or pain in the rectum

2. Chlamydia symptoms in women:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Discomfort or pain in the lower abdomen
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Pain during intercourse

When to seek emergency care

While testicular pain can be a symptom of an STI complication (Epididymitis), sudden and severe testicular pain is a medical emergency known as Testicular Torsion.

Call 000 or go to the Emergency Department immediately if you experience:

  • Sudden, severe pain in one or both testicles.
  • Swelling of the scrotum accompanied by nausea or vomiting.

How does chlamydia spread?

Chlamydia spreads through sexual engagements, such as vaginal, oral, and anal sex with an infected individual. It can also be transferred from a mother to her baby during delivery, leading to possible complications like pneumonia (lung/chest infection) and conjunctivitis (red eyes) in the newborn.

Can men get chlamydia without having sex?

It is highly unlikely that a person could get chlamydia without sexual contact. The bacteria responsible for chlamydia does not live very long outside of the urethra, rectum, throat, cervix, or cornea. If wet bodily fluids from these sites are transmitted, e.g. by sharing sex toys, then it is conceivable that you could acquire the infection. It is not possible to acquire chlamydia through skin contact with intact skin, such as sitting on a toilet seat contaminated with recently deposited infected fluids.

Symptoms

While many men with chlamydia are asymptomatic, symptoms normally show after 1 to 3 weeks of exposure. Symptoms may include:

  1. Painful urination: A burning sensation when urinating.
  2. Penile discharge: A clear or hazy discharge from the tip of the penis.
  3. Pain or swelling in the testicles: Although uncommon, it can occur.
  4. Discomfort: Pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen.
  5. Anal symptoms: If chlamydia is caught during anal intercourse, it can cause rectum discomfort, discharge, and bleeding.
  6. Persistent sore throat: If chlamydia is transmitted during oral sex, men may experience a sore throat.

How do you get chlamydia?

Chlamydia is mainly transmitted through sexual activity, which includes:

  1. Unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex: The bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is spread through contact with infected fluids from the genital, rectal, or oral areas.
  2. Exposure to infected sexual partner(s): Having multiple sexual partners raises the likelihood of infection, particularly if protection isn’t used regularly.
  3. Transmission from mother to child: Although this is less applicable to men, it’s important to mention that an infected mother can transmit chlamydia to her newborn during delivery, potentially causing eye infections or pneumonia in the infant.

Home remedies for chlamydia

Home remedies cannot treat, manage, or cure Chlamydia. The only effective treatment for this infection is prescription antibiotics. Delaying medical treatment can lead to severe complications, including infertility.

The following general wellness practices are for supporting your overall immune system and gut health while you are taking your prescribed course of antibiotics, but they have no direct effect on the Chlamydia bacteria:

Probiotics:

Probiotics, found in foods such as yogurt, kefir, and kombucha, help maintain healthy gut bacteria. This can boost immune function and perhaps lessen antibiotic side effects. Including these items in your diet or taking a supplement will boost the body’s natural defences and aid in overall healing.

Garlic:

Garlic, known for its inherent antibacterial qualities, may enhance the body’s immunological response while taking antibiotics. Adding raw or cooked garlic to your meals may bring additional benefits. Still, others prefer garlic supplements for more concentrated effects—consulting a healthcare expert before taking large dosages is advised.

Turmeric:

Curcumin, the main ingredient in turmeric, has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects that may alleviate chlamydia symptoms. Including turmeric powder in your meals or taking a curcumin supplement will help boost your immune system and provide comfort while undergoing treatment.

Echinacea:

Echinacea, commonly used to boost the immune system, may help reduce symptoms and aid in recovery from illnesses. Echinacea tea and supplements are popular options, but it is advisable to consult a healthcare expert to establish the proper dosage and prevent any interactions.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV):

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is thought to have antibacterial qualities, and while it is not a cure, it could provide some comfort. Mixing 1-2 tablespoons of ACV in water every day is a typical technique; however, it should not be used topically since it can irritate the skin.

Hydration and rest:

Drinking enough water helps eliminate toxins, and rest promotes immune function, both of which benefit healing. Staying hydrated with at least 8 glasses of water each day and getting enough sleep will help manage symptoms and promote the body’s healing processes.
