Prostate Health
Prostate health is an important aspect of men’s wellbeing, especially as they age. Consult an AHPRA-registered practitioner online within minutes for medical advice about prostate health, available 24/7.
When to consult a doctor for prostate health?
If you have urinary or ejaculation-related symptoms
See a doctor if you experience weak urine flow, difficulty starting or stopping urination, pain during urination, or notice blood in your urine or semen, as these may indicate prostate or urinary tract issues.
If you have pain or discomfort in the pelvic area
Consult a doctor if you have ongoing pain in the lower back, hips, pelvis, or thighs, which can be linked to prostate inflammation or other prostate-related conditions.
If you are over 50 or have a family history
Regular prostate check-ups are recommended if you are over 50, or earlier if prostate conditions or prostate cancer run in your family, to support early detection and better outcomes.

Symptoms
Prostate issues can manifest with a range of symptoms, often affecting urination and, in some cases, causing pain or discomfort. Here’s a breakdown of common symptoms for prostate conditions:
- Difficulty starting or stopping urination
- Excessive urination especially at night
- Dribbling at the end of urination
- Feeling that the bladder isn’t empty even after urination
- Pain and discomfort in the pelvic or genital area
- Flu like symptoms such as fever, chills, and muscle aches
- Weak urine flow
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Pain in the lower back, hips, or thighs
- Erectile dysfunction or discomfort in the pelvic area
When to seek emergency care
Call 000 or attend your nearest Emergency Department immediately if you experience:
- Complete inability to urinate (acute urinary retention) — this is a urological emergency requiring catheterisation
- High fever with severe pelvic pain, chills, or rigors — this may indicate acute bacterial prostatitis with sepsis
- Blood in urine in significant amounts — particularly if accompanied by clots or pain
- Sudden severe pelvic or back pain
Do not book a telehealth consultation for these presentations.
A Hola Health telehealth consultation for prostate health is appropriate for symptom assessment, PSA referrals, prostate health monitoring, and management of stable or chronic prostate conditions. If you are unsure whether your symptoms require emergency care, call 000 — it is always safer to seek immediate help than to delay.
Health checks recommended
It’s generally recommended that men start prostate health checks around age 50, as the risk of prostate issues, including benign enlargement and prostate cancer, increases with age. However, men at higher risk, such as those with a family history of prostate cancer may consider starting checks earlier, around age 45. Regular screenings typically include a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and sometimes a digital rectal exam (DRE), both of which help detect changes in prostate health early. PSA screening is a personal decision — speak with your GP about the benefits and limitations of PSA testing before deciding whether screening is right for you. Some of the regular health checks for men are:
- Blood pressure checks
- Lipid profile analysis
- Glucose monitoring
- Oral health surveillance
- Skin checks
- Prostate health checks
- Mental well-being check
Hola Health provides a convenient way to consult an AHPRA-registered doctor online, 24/7 across Australia.
Clinical note: A telehealth assessment can help evaluate prostate health symptoms, arrange pathology referrals (including PSA testing), provide lifestyle advice, and issue prescriptions if clinically indicated. Telehealth is a complementary service — prostate assessment often requires a physical examination, including a digital rectal examination (DRE), which cannot be performed via telehealth. Diagnosis of prostate conditions and initiation of cancer management require in-person specialist assessment. Your practitioner may refer you to a urologist or oncologist if clinically appropriate. If you are unable to urinate, have a high fever with severe pelvic pain, or have significant blood in your urine, call 000 or attend an Emergency Department immediately — do not book a telehealth consultation for these presentations. We recommend sharing your consult summaries with your regular GP to ensure continuity of care.
