Instant scripts Australia - FAQs
From scripts online NSW, QLD, VIC, WA to SA, ACT, TAS, NT, Australians frequently have queries about their first online prescription.
What is an instant script?
An instant script is like getting a regular prescription from your doctor, but it’s done through the internet. It’s a digital document made by a licensed Australian healthcare provider. With an online prescription, you can get your medicine from a pharmacy without needing a paper prescription. After you fill in your details and have a short video consult with an online doctor or a nurse practitioner, your prescription will be sent to your phone as an eScript. Once you have your online prescription, you can go to any pharmacy to get your medicine or even order it online for same-day chemist delivery within 2 hours. Delivery time may vary in some instances. Online scripts in Australia have revolutionised the way medicine is dispensed.
Are instant scripts valid?
Yes! Instant scripts online are the digital version of paper prescriptions. They follow the same regulations, making them a safe and convenient alternative for getting the medication you need.
If you need a new script, consult with an AHPRA-registered medical practitioner anytime to discuss your request.
If you need a refill, a quick telehealth consultation can get your script approved and sent to your phone—fast and hassle-free.
Can I get a script without seeing a Doctor in person?
Yes! In Australia, you can get an online script through a telehealth consultation without visiting a doctor in person. For common health issues, you can request an instant script without seeing a doctor in person or at the clinic. With Hola, there’s no need for an appointment—simply request a script, and an AHPRA-registered medical practitioner can assess your request and issue an instant script if suitable. In some cases, your doctor may recommend seeing a GP in person for a physical examination or ongoing care. For emergencies, always call 000. Telehealth should not be used in urgent situations.
How do I fill my instant script?
Once you’ve completed your consult with the AHPRA-registered doctor, and they’ve determined it’s suitable, you’ll get your instantscript delivered straight to your phone via SMS.
Once you receive your online script, you can get your medicine delivered the same day with our chemist delivery service or go to your local pharmacy whenever it suits you and get your script filled. It’s that simple!
What medications can't be ordered online?
It’s important to note that not all medications can be ordered online. The decision to prescribe medication depends on the consulting health practitioner’s assessment of your condition. While many medications can be prescribed online, some, such as sedatives or certain S8-classified medicines, may not be issued. Even if prescribed, there may be limitations on the quantity provided.
Prescriptions are issued at the discretion of the medical practitioner, who determines the best course of action. GPs and Nurse Practitioners are unable to prescribe schedule 8 medicines and schedule 4D medicines via a telehealth consultation. Schedule 8 and Schedule 4D medicines include, but are not limited to:
Schedule S8: Alprazolam, Buprenorphine, Dexamphetamine, Fentanyl, Hydromorphone, Lis-dexamphetamine, Methadone, Methylphenidate, Morphine, Oxycodone, Tapentadol, and Pethidine.
Schedule 4D: Benzodiazepines (Clonazepam, Diazepam, Oxazepam, Temazepam), Phentermine, Pregabalin, Testosterone, Modafinil, Zolpidem, and Zopiclone.
What would I do if I did not receive the online script the medical practitioner agreed to issue?
If our medical practitioner agrees to issue the instant script online, you should receive it via SMS or email within 15 minutes. In case you haven’t received it, you can contact our support team at support@hola.health and raise a query. We will get back to you at the earliest and ensure your prescription is delivered.
What do I do if the script online I was issued is incorrect?
If you receive script that you believe is incorrect, it’s essential to address the issue promptly. Reach out to Hola Health Support promptly at support@hola.health and raise a concern along with your appointment details. Our support team will resolve the issue and get the right script to you if suggested by the medical practitioner.
What do I do if the medication I was prescribed is out of stock?
If your pharmacist informs you of a shortage in your prescribed medication, the pharmacist might be able to suggest a medicine from a different brand that has the same composition. You can also check our online pharmacy delivery to see if the medicine is available and order directly online.
What if my medication isn’t listed?
Our list of medications is what we deem appropriate for telehealth, where a doctor can reasonably assess the patient’s condition remotely and prescribe suitable treatment. If your medication is not listed, it can still be
prescribed via a consultation, as this allows our doctors to better assess your needs. We do not prescribe any Schedule 8 drugs.
Will my health practitioner have the same qualifications as a normal doctor?
Yes, all our telehealth doctor or medical practitioner are real and licensed Australian medical practitioners with the same qualifications as your regular GPs. All our medical practitioners who consult online are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). This means you get advice from professionals meeting the same high standards as doctors in physical clinics. You will get scripts online instead of a paper prescription and that’s the only difference.
Can an online doctor make a proper assessment without a physical examination?
Yes, a health practitioner can make a proper assessment without a physical examination. But it depends on the type of health concern. For regular issues such as colds, coughs, fatigue, headaches, allergies, Body ache or Gastro, medical practitioners can ask questions about your symptoms, medical history, and any visible signs to make a diagnosis. They may also use video calls to see and talk to you, which can help with assessment.
However, for certain conditions that require hands-on exams or tests an in-person visit to a doctor’s office is necessary for a complete assessment. Medical practitioners do their best to provide accurate advice and treatment options based on the information you provide, but they may recommend seeing a doctor in person if they feel it’s needed for a proper evaluation.
Will online scripts be accepted by the pharmacist?
Yes, you can use scripts online in NSW, QLD, VIC, SA, ACT, WA, NT and across most of the pharmacies in all Australian states & territories. The pharmacies are equipped to dispense medicines using electronic prescriptions. The prescription token will be directly sent to you via SMS or mobile which you can then use to get your medicines from anywhere in Australia. Explore:
Can I get an instant script without a Medicare card?
You can get your script token even if you do not have a Medicare card provided you know your Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) number. You don’t need a Medicare Card to get an e-prescription unless the medicine is on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). For non-PBS prescriptions, you only need an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) number. An IHI is a special 16-digit number that helps identify you for healthcare. It ensures that healthcare professionals have the correct information for you when you receive care. Even if you’re not eligible for Medicare, you can still get an IHI number from Services Australia.
Will I be charged anything for a bulk-billed prescription?
No, if your medication is searchable on our list, you will not be charged any out-of-pocket costs.
