What is a dating scan?
A dating scan is an early pregnancy ultrasound used to confirm the number of weeks of pregnancy. It helps estimate the due date and ensure the pregnancy is progressing as expected.

When is a dating scan recommended?
- Irregular periods
- Unclear or unknown last menstrual period (LMP)
- Bleeding or pain during early pregnancy
- History of previous miscarriage
- Conception through IVF or other assisted reproductive methods
- To assess viability in the early stages of pregnancy
What does a dating scan assess?
- Gestational age- Determines the stage of pregnancy by measuring the baby (usually crown-rump length).
- Fetal heartbeat- Confirms the baby’s heart is beating.
- Estimated due date (EDD)- Provides a projected due date based on fetal size measurements.
- Number of embryos- Establishes whether there is one baby or more than one.
- Pregnancy location- Ensures the pregnancy is located within the uterus.
What types of dating scans are available?
The type of scan depends on the stage of pregnancy.
- Transabdominal ultrasound- A probe is gently moved over the lower abdomen; it usually requires a full bladder.
- Transvaginal ultrasound- A narrow probe is inserted into the vagina to obtain clearer images, especially in early pregnancy.
What do the results show?
The results confirm the stage of pregnancy, estimate the due date, and check for a fetal heartbeat. It also ensures the pregnancy is inside the uterus and identifies whether there is one baby or more.
What are the limitations?
- Scans performed very early may not detect a heartbeat.
- The due date may be revised slightly as the pregnancy advances.
- Image quality can be influenced by body size or bladder fullness.
- The scan does not assess detailed anatomy; it is evaluated during later scans.
How to prepare for a dating scan?
- For a transabdominal scan- Drink ample water an hour before the scan and do not empty your bladder.
- For a transvaginal scan- You may need to empty your bladder before the scan.
- Wear easy, comfortable clothing.
- Bring your referral and any previous pregnancy records.
- Follow all instructions from your doctor or imaging clinic.
