What is a hip X-ray?

A hip X-ray captures pictures of your hip joint using low levels of radiation. It helps doctors check for changes in the bones, joint spaces, or overall alignment of the hip.

Note: If you are experiencing any emergency symptoms, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department. Do not request a telehealth referral for emergency conditions.

  • Pain after a fall or injury
  • Difficulty walking or limping
  • Hip pain or groin pain
  • Stiffness or reduced movement
  • Clicking or locking sensation

Hip pain after a fall or injury (for suspected fractures or inability to bear weight), call 000 immediately

  • Hip fracture- Break in the upper thigh bone (common in older adults)
  • Hip dislocation- Ball of the joint out of its socket
  • Osteoarthritis- Age-related wear and tear resulting in joint space narrowing and pain
  • Bone spurs- Extra bone growth due to joint wear
  • Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)- Abnormal hip joint development
  • Tumours and lesions- Abnormal bone growth or damage
  • Infection (osteomyelitis)- Bone infection causing structural changes

Hip X-rays can be taken from different angles to provide a clearer view of the joint and surrounding structures.

  • AP pelvis view- Front view of both the hips and pelvis
  • Lateral hip view- Side view of the affected hip
  • Frog-leg view- The legs are gently turned outward to get a clearer view of the joint structure (often used in younger patients)

A hip X-ray shows the shape and alignment of the hip joint, including the ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum). It can help detect broken bones, arthritis, joint narrowing, and other bone changes.

  • Cannot fully assess soft tissue injuries
  • Initial joint damage may not be visible
  • Does not clearly show muscles, tendons, or cartilage

Note: A telehealth consultation is a convenient alternative for discussing symptoms, but it does not replace a physical examination. If your condition requires physical palpation or assessment, the GP may advise you to see a doctor in person.

  • Usually, no special preparation is required.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Remove jewellery or metal objects.
  • Inform staff if you are pregnant.
  • Follow all instructions from your doctor.
