What is a rib X-ray?
A rib X-ray is a simple imaging test that uses a small amount of radiation to capture detailed pictures of the ribs. It is used to assess fractures and other rib abnormalities.

Note: If you are experiencing any emergency symptoms, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department. Do not request a telehealth referral for emergency conditions.
What conditions can a rib X-ray help detect?
- Rib fractures- Cracks or breaks in one or more rib bones
- Bone infection (osteomyelitis)- Infection affecting the rib bone tissue
- Stress fractures- Small cracks caused by recurrent strain
- Bone tumours or lesions- Unusual growths or damage in rib bones
- Chest wall abnormalities- Structural irregularities affecting the rib cage.
Note: If you are experiencing severe chest pain, significant difficulty breathing, chest pain after major trauma (motor vehicle accident or fall from height), or if you feel your heart is racing or you are becoming unwell — call 000 or attend an Emergency Department immediately. Do not book a telehealth referral for these presentations. A telehealth rib X-ray referral is appropriate for persistent, localised rib pain after minor injury where you can breathe normally and are not in respiratory distress.
What types of rib X-rays are available?
Rib X-rays may be taken from different views, based on the area of pain and the suspected injury.
- Unilateral rib series- Examines the ribs on one side of the chest only.
- Bilateral rib series- Evaluates the ribs on both sides of the chest.
- Rib series with chest view- Involves a chest X-ray to evaluate the lungs and the ribs.
What does a rib X-ray show?
A rib X-ray displays the number, shape, and alignment of the rib bones. It can reveal fractures, damage, or abnormalities of the rib cage.
What are the limitations?
- Small or hairline fractures may be difficult to detect
- Cartilage and surrounding soft tissues are not clearly seen
- A rib X-ray offers only a partial view of the lungs
Note: An online consultation cannot replace a physical examination. A GP needs to assess your breathing sounds and chest movement in person to ensure your safety. If the GP determines your symptoms require a physical exam, they will refer you to an in-person clinic.
How to prepare for a rib X-ray?
While no special preparation is needed, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing
- Remove jewellery, belt or any other metal objects
- Inform staff if you are pregnant
- Follow the instructions given by your doctor
