Bulk billing means the doctor or provider bills Medicare directly for the service, and you are not charged any out-of-pocket cost.
Most Australians with a valid Medicare card can access bulk billing services. It is important to note that there could be certain restrictions (timing and availability) in a few services that are bulk billed.
Medicare eligibility requirements
- Becoming eligible requires meeting certain residency and citizenship criteria to obtain a Medicare card.
- Most Australian citizens qualify for Medicare. This coverage is extended to permanent residents and some visa holders as well.
A healthcare provider can decide which service to bulk bill and if timing applies.
How to confirm eligibility
- Check with the provider: Check the website to confirm if the services are bulk billed and what the timings are. Hola Health offers many services like after-hours bulk bill, mental health care plan online and script online.
- Inquire when booking: Some providers indicate if bulk billing is available for certain services when you are booking online. With Hola, the urgent care, after-hours doctor consult and scripts are available on weekdays 6 pm–7:30 am, Saturday 12 am–7:30 am & from 12 pm, Sunday & Public Holidays 24hrs. Mental health care plan is available every day with no time restrictions.
Bulk billing update in Australia
- Since November 1, 2025, all Medicare-eligible patients are eligible for bulk billing incentives for standard GP consultations, meaning you will likely not have a gap payment for these services.
- Eligibility for bulk billing incentives for other services, such as diagnostic imaging and pathology, still depends on age (under 16) or holding a Commonwealth concession card.
