If you need a repeat prescription, you may not need to visit a GP clinic in person.

In Australia, you can get a repeat prescription without visiting a GP in-clinic via a trusted telehealth service. This is done through real doctor consultations via video call on an Australian-registered platform like Hola Health. The doctor will assess whether it’s clinically appropriate and safe to prescribe the medications needed.

A prescription cannot be issued automatically by a website or chatbot. A qualified doctor must assess your request before a script can be provided.

Can I get a repeat prescription online in Australia?

Yes. An AHPRA-registered doctor at Hola Health can issue a repeat prescription through a telehealth consultation. A Medicare card or Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) is needed. If approved, your eScript is sent directly to your phone by SMS. Most patients receive their script within minutes of the consultation.

How the process usually works

Alternatively, you can opt for pharmacy delivery to get the medications delivered the same day.

What ID, docs and medical information are needed?

Here is the exact breakdown of the identification, documentation, and medical information required to complete this process.

Tip: If you use My Health Record, it can help provide a summary of your prescription history.

Why do I need a video consultation to get an online prescription?

Video consultations are needed to make sure you get a proper assessment, so the doctor can choose the appropriate treatment for your condition. The AHPRA Medical Board, which sets standards for doctors, has made this very clear in its updated telehealth guidelines.

Are online prescription services safe?

Yes, online prescription services are safe if accredited and regulated by relevant health authorities. By the end of the 2024–25 period on 30 June 2025, more than 360 million electronic prescriptions had been issued in Australia.

Here’s the breakdown into data –

Data Point  Metric / Value Source
Total eScripts Issued Over 360 million (as of 30 June 2025) ADHA Annual Report 2024–25
National PBS Processing ~300 million prescriptions per year Australian Department of Health
Initial Implementation Date 6 May 2020 ADHA Performance Report

How long does it take to get an online repeat prescription?

Usually in minutes with Hola Health. The eScript is sent to your phone upon approval.

PBS, private scripts, and what you’ll pay

The cost of your medication doesn’t change because you got the script online. The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) sets the co-payment for the most common medications. As of 2026, general PBS co-payments are capped at a set amount per script; concession card holders pay a lower capped amount. The PBS Safety Net reduces this further once you pass a threshold for the calendar year.

The consultation cost is separate. Hola Health consults for repeat script is via a standard telehealth consult.

What can you not get online?

Under Australian prescribing guidelines set by AHPRA and state health authorities, certain high-risk medications cannot be issued via a quick online form or brief telehealth consult. These require a rigorous in-person GP review:

The doctor will advise if an in-person review is required.

What happens if my condition changes and I need a different medication?

In such a case, a new standard consultation will be necessary to assess your needs and provide a new prescription.

Can I get a new prescription (not just a repeat) via telehealth?

Yes. Our GPs can prescribe new medications during a standard telehealth consultation if they determine it is clinically appropriate. You are not limited to repeat prescriptions only. The GP will assess your condition, review your medical history, and issue a same-day prescription via eScript if suitable.
