Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) occurs when a man is unable to achieve or keep an erection long enough to have sexual intercourse. Speak to an Australian-registered online doctor.

When to consult a doctor for ED?

If erectile dysfunction is persistent or recurrent

Consult a doctor if erection problems last for several weeks, occur consistently, or worsen over time, as this may indicate an underlying physical or psychological condition.

If you have underlying health conditions or medication concerns

Seek medical advice if you have conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure, or if erectile issues begin after starting a new medication.

If erectile dysfunction affects mental health or relationships

See a doctor if erectile dysfunction causes stress, anxiety, reduced sexual desire, relationship difficulties, or if you are unable to maintain erections or experience morning erections.

Causes

  1. Temporary erectile dysfunction can be caused by fatigue, stress, anxiety, excessive alcohol use, or substance abuse.
  2. Psychological factors such as performance anxiety, depression, or emotional stress may interfere with normal erections.
  3. Chronic erectile dysfunction is often linked to ageing and reduced blood flow to the penis.
  4. Underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes can contribute to ED.
  5. Certain medications, including those with blood pressure, depression, or prostate conditions, may cause or worsen ED.
  6. Lifestyle factors like obesity, smoking, and poor sleep habits or sleep disorders can also increase the risk of erectile dysfunction.

Symptoms

It is important to understand that occasionally erectile dysfunction is ok as people might not achieve an erection all the time due to various factors. However, if this is a recurring condition then there are chances that you might have Erectile dysfunction. Here are some symptoms of ED:

  • Inability to achieve an erection
  • Trouble maintaining an erection during sexual activity.
  • Reduced sexual desire or libido.
  • Erections that are not firm enough for penetration.
  • Failure to achieve spontaneous erections, especially during the night or in the morning.

Types

Understanding the different types of erectile dysfunction helps identify the underlying cause and ensures the most appropriate and effective treatment approach is chosen.

  • Organic erectile dysfunction
    • Caused by physical or medical conditions
    • Linked to issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, obesity, and smoking
    • Can also be triggered or worsened by certain medications
    • More common with increasing age and often requires medical treatment
  • Psychogenic (psychological) erectile dysfunction
    • Caused by mental or emotional factors
    • Associated with stress, anxiety, depression, performance anxiety, fatigue, or excessive alcohol use
    • May be temporary but needs medical attention if it becomes recurring
  • Mixed erectile dysfunction
    • Involves both physical and psychological causes
    • Physical health issues combined with stress or anxiety can worsen symptoms.

Telehealth for assessment

It is important to speak to a GP first to understand and manage your symptoms.

Hola Health provides a convenient way for you to consult a doctor online, 24/7 across Australia. Our AHPRA-registered Australian online GP will conduct a comprehensive assessment to provide the best possible care.

Start your GP consult now

Clinical note: An online GP consult provides a clinical assessment of erectile dysfunction and evaluates if a prescription, pathology referral, or specialist referral is appropriate. Telehealth is a complementary service; an in-person physical examination (including blood pressure, BMI, and genital examination) is needed to rule out structural issues or occult cardiovascular disease. Online GPs can provide pathology referrals, as well as prescriptions if clinically indicated. Diagnosis and prescribing via telehealth rely on a real-time video or phone consultation. In case of a sudden loss of vision, hearing, or an erection lasting longer than four hours (priapism), call 000 or visit an Emergency Department immediately. We recommend sharing your consult summaries with your regular GP to ensure continuity of care.
