When to consult a doctor for hair loss

If hair loss is causing significant stress or anxiety

Seek medical advice if hair loss is affecting your emotional well-being, confidence, or quality of life, and you are struggling to cope with the changes.

If you notice red, swollen, or blistered patches

Consult a doctor if hair loss is accompanied by scalp redness, swelling, pain, or blistering, as this may suggest an infection or inflammation.

If you have a family history of hair loss

If hair loss runs in your family, early medical advice can help identify suitable treatment options and slow progression.

Types of hair loss

Hair loss is the loss of hair on the scalp or any other part of the body, either gradually or abruptly. There are many different types of hair loss, such as:

  • Male pattern hair loss: Male pattern baldness starts with hair loss at the hairline above the temples, leading to a receding hairline and thinning at the crown.
  • Female pattern hair loss: Female pattern hair loss is slightly different from male pattern baldness and starts at the parting, and the hair gets thin across the scalp.
  • Alopecia areata: an autoimmune disease in which your immune system attacks hair follicles. This might happen due to genetics, stress, anxiety, or other environmental factors.
  • Telogen effluvium: Temporary hair shedding triggered by stress, illness, childbirth, weight loss, or thyroid issues.
  • Tinea capitis: Fungal infection of the scalp (ringworm) causing hair loss.
