Overview
Nobody plans to get sick at 10pm on a Sunday. But it happens. And when it does, knowing your options ahead of time saves you from an unnecessary trip to the ED or a long wait at the hospital.
Brisbane has more after-hours care options than most people realise. Here is a plain-language guide to what is available, what it costs, and who it is for.
Emergency: Call 000
Triple Zero (000) is for life-threatening emergencies only. Not every urgent situation qualifies, and using it for minor illness puts pressure on paramedics who are responding to genuine emergencies.
Use it for:
- Chest pain or suspected stroke
- Difficulty breathing or anaphylaxis
- Unconsciousness or major trauma with uncontrolled bleeding
Cost: Free from any phone, mobile included. Queensland residents are generally covered for ambulance call-outs, but check your health insurance or concession status if you are unsure.
Open: 24/7, 365 days a year.
After-Hours Telehealth and Phone Advice
After-hours telehealth is a convenient first point of contact for many non-emergency concerns. A phone call or video consult gets you professional advice without the wait, the drive, or the waiting room.
Please note that some conditions may require a physical examination that cannot be performed via video; in these cases, the doctor will advise you to visit an in-person clinic.

Medicare Urgent Care Clinics
These are walk-in clinics for things that need same-day attention but are not emergencies. They are fully bulk billed, which makes them one of the most accessible options in Brisbane right now.
Think: a cut that might need stitching, a child with a high fever, or an infection that is getting worse. Not a broken leg, but not something you want to leave until Monday either.
Brisbane locations currently include:
- Inala Community Health Centre, Inala
- Redcliffe GP Urgent Care Clinic, Redcliffe
More clinics are being added across Greater Brisbane. Check health.gov.au for the most current list before you go.
- Cost: Bulk billed, no out-of-pocket cost with Medicare
- Hours: Extended hours including evenings and weekends (varies by clinic)
- Who can use it: Medicare card holders. No referral needed
- How to access: Walk in. Most clinics do not require a booking
After-Hours Home Visits
If you or someone in your care is too unwell to travel, a GP can come to you. This service is especially useful for young children with high fevers, elderly patients, or anyone recovering from a procedure.
Brisbane providers include:
- National Home Doctor Service: 13 26 60
- Dial A Doctor: covers Brisbane metro
- Home Call Doctor: Brisbane and surrounding suburbs
- When to use: When travelling to a clinic is genuinely not safe or practical
- Cost: Bulk billing may apply with a valid Medicare card. Confirm when you call as fees vary between providers
- Hours: Usually 6pm to 8am on weekdays, plus all day on weekends and public holidays
- How to access: Call your preferred provider directly to book
Pharmacies
Pharmacists are an underused resource. They can advise on symptoms, recommend over-the-counter treatments, and flag when something warrants a GP visit. Many Brisbane pharmacies trade well into the evening.
Extended hours options in Brisbane:
- Chemist Warehouse: multiple locations, many open until 9pm or later
- Priceline Pharmacy: select Brisbane stores with late trading
- Terry White Chemmart: various locations with extended hours
- When to use: Minor pain, cold symptoms, skin irritation, or to pick up a prescription after a telehealth consult
- Cost: Advice is free. Prescriptions are priced under the PBS with a Medicare or concession card
- Hours: Check Google Maps for the nearest late-trading pharmacy
- How to access: Walk in. No referral or appointment needed
