Overview
Getting sick after hours is stressful. Your GP is closed, the kids are unsettled, and you are trying to figure out whether this actually needs a trip to the emergency department or not. In WA, the options have improved a lot over the last few years. Here is a breakdown of what is available, what it costs, and when each one actually makes sense.
If It Is an Emergency: Call 000
Some things just cannot wait. Call 000 if someone has chest pain, is struggling to breathe, has signs of a stroke (face drooping, slurred speech, arm weakness), is bleeding heavily, has lost consciousness, or is having a severe allergic reaction.
Do not drive yourself to the hospital in these situations. Call 000 and let the ambulance come to you. It is free from any phone, including mobiles with no credit, and it is available around the clock.
If you are not sure whether something counts as an emergency, call 000 and let the operator help you decide. You will not be in trouble for calling.
Perth's major EDs are at Royal Perth Hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner, Fiona Stanley, and Perth Children's Hospital for anyone under 16.
After-Hours Telehealth and Phone Advice
For a lot of after-hours situations, you do not need to go anywhere. A phone call or video consult can handle more than people realise.
Hola Health
Hola Health is a telehealth service that connects you with an Australian-registered After hour GP by video. It is genuinely useful when you need an actual doctor's assessment, not just general information, and your regular GP's books are closed.
Think UTIs, skin infections, repeat prescriptions, medical certificates, or coughs and colds that are not resolving. You book online at Hola Health, and bulk billing is available for eligible Medicare card holders. Please note *Hola Health bulk billing after-hours doctor consults are for urgent care and available to Medicare cardholders during these hours only: Weekdays 6pm–7:30am | Saturday 12am–7:30am & from 12pm | Sunday & public holidays: 24 hours. It runs after hours, evenings, and weekends, which is the whole point.
Healthdirect
Healthdirect is the free government nurse helpline. Call 1800 022 222 any time, day or night. A registered nurse will talk through your symptoms and help you figure out what to do next.
It is genuinely helpful when you are on the fence. Not sure if that rash needs to be seen tonight or can wait until morning? Not sure whether to take your child in? Healthdirect will give you a real clinical opinion without you having to leave the house. The website also has a symptom checker if you prefer to start there.
Mental Health Line (WA)
If someone is in mental health crisis in WA, this is the number to call. It is state-funded and staffed by actual mental health clinicians who can assess the situation and connect you to local services if needed.
Call 1800 011 511. It runs 24 hours a day. It is free, and it is specifically designed for WA, which means the clinician on the other end knows what services are available here.
Lifeline
Lifeline is different from the Mental Health Line. It is a crisis and suicide prevention service run nationally, staffed by trained volunteers. If you or someone you know is overwhelmed, struggling to cope, or having thoughts of self-harm, call 13 11 14. You can also text 0477 13 11 14 if calling feels too hard.
It is free and available 24/7. It is not a medical service, but sometimes that is not what someone needs.
Feeling unwell? Consult an Australian-registered GP online, 24/7.
Medicare Urgent Care Clinics
This is one of the best developments in Australian primary care in recent years. Urgent Care Clinics (UCCs) are walk-in clinics for things that genuinely need attention today but are not emergencies. No appointment, no out-of-pocket cost if you have Medicare.
They handle things like cuts that need stitching, suspected minor fractures, high fevers, ear infections, eye problems, mild burns, and skin infections. Basically anything where you would normally end up in an ED waiting room for three hours behind more serious cases.
In WA, clinics are currently open across Perth metro including areas like Armadale, Midland, Rockingham, Joondalup, and Fremantle. Hours vary by location but most run extended evenings and weekends. The rollout is still expanding, so it is worth checking health.gov.au or Healthdirect for the current list before heading out.
Regional WA coverage is limited at this stage. If you are outside the metro, Healthdirect or telehealth are better starting points.
After-Hours Home Visits
Home visits still exist, and they are more useful than many people realise. If your child is running a fever at 10pm and you cannot face loading everyone into the car, or if you have an elderly parent who physically cannot travel, a GP can come to you.
The National Home Doctor Service covers Perth and you can book by calling 13SICK (13 74 25). They operate evenings, overnight, and on weekends. Medicare rebates apply, but it is worth asking about out-of-pocket costs when you call as this varies.
Coverage is concentrated in Perth metro. If you are further out, telehealth is more practical.
Pharmacies
Do not underestimate your pharmacist for after-hours concerns. They are clinically trained, they can give real advice on minor illnesses, and you do not need an appointment.
For colds, hayfever, mild pain, minor skin conditions, digestive issues, and questions about your current medications, a pharmacist is often the fastest and most accessible option. Advice is free. If you need medication, PBS prescriptions are subsidised with your Medicare card.
Hours vary, but extended-hours pharmacies are easy to find across Perth. Chemist Warehouse locations tend to trade until midnight at many sites, and some are open around the clock. Terry White Chemmart also offers extended hours at selected stores. Use findapharmacy.com.au to find the nearest one to you that is currently open.
